Content Rating System
When you publish, you tell us one thing about audience: is this work Mature (18+), or not? Everything that isn’t marked Mature is treated as general audience. The tiers below are your guide for where your work falls. Marking a mature work as general to dodge the age gate is a violation — our moderation team will re-rate it and may issue a warning.
Only the Mature (18+) rating triggers age-gating. General and Teen work is public. The gate is enforced everywhere a story can be opened — feeds, search, and direct links alike.
The Narrative Purpose Standard
Mature content is permitted on Novira when it serves the story.
Content meets this standard when it advances character development, explores consequence, creates dramatic tension, or is intrinsic to the emotional or thematic truth of the work. This is the standard applied to literary fiction, prestige television, and graphic novels worldwide — and it is the standard Novira applies.
Content that does not meet this standard — graphic sexual depiction incidental to the work, explicit imagery inserted without narrative function, or content whose primary purpose is sexual arousal rather than storytelling — is not permitted regardless of rating.
Katha (Prose)
Explicit written sexual content is permitted under the M rating, provided it meets the Narrative Purpose Standard. Dark romance, literary erotica, psychological horror, and morally complex narratives are all within scope. We are not Wattpad.
Chitra (Comics & Visual Work)
Artistic nudity, mature themes, and violence depicted in a visual medium are permitted under the M rating. Explicit graphic depiction of sexual acts is not permitted in visual format. This is a firm platform boundary required by the payment processors and app ecosystems through which Novira operates — not an editorial judgment on creative intent.
Flux
Flux posts follow the same rating system as published works. Posts must match the rating of any content they preview. M-rated teasers, WIP panels, and process posts are allowed but must be labeled and are not shown to unauthenticated users.
Prohibited Content
The following content types are strictly prohibited on Novira. Posting such material may result in removal, account restrictions, suspension, permanent termination, and legal reporting where required or appropriate.
Child Safety (CSAM)
Novira has zero tolerance for content that sexually depicts or exploits minors. This includes illustrated or written material. We may remove the content, terminate the account, preserve relevant evidence, and report to appropriate authorities or reporting channels where required or permitted by law.
Non-Consensual Content
Sexual or violent scenarios depicting real or fictional persons without consent are prohibited when presented approvingly or without narrative consequence. Fiction may explore these themes critically — but content that glorifies, normalises, or instructs is not permitted under any rating.
Intellectual Property Theft
You must own the rights to all content you publish or have permission to use it. Reposting others' work without permission or a valid license is prohibited. Use of third-party assets without citation, permission, or license may result in content removal, copyright action, or account restrictions.
Hate Speech & Targeted Attacks
We do not permit content that promotes violence or incites hatred against groups based on race, religion, sexual orientation, caste, or disability. This includes demeaning slurs and dehumanizing imagery.
Illegal Exploits & Doxxing
Sharing private personal information (PII), malicious code, or instructions for real-world illegal activities (facilitating human trafficking, drug synthesis, etc.) is strictly forbidden.
What We Encourage
Content Warnings
Empower your readers to choose their journey. If your story touches on themes like suicide, abuse, self-harm, war trauma, or other distressing topics, include a clear content warning in your chapter description or story summary.
Proper Mature Content Labeling
Artistic freedom includes mature themes, but honesty is required. Mark your work as Mature (18+) when it qualifies, and note explicit chapters in their descriptions so readers can choose. Mislabeling a Mature work as general to bypass the age gate will be re-rated by our moderation team and may result in a formal warning.
AI Content Disclosure
If your story, cover art, or any other content was fully or partially generated by AI tools (ChatGPT, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, etc.), you must disclose this in your story's description. "AI-Assisted" or "AI-Generated Cover" labels are sufficient. This builds trust with your audience.
Fan Fiction
Fan fiction is welcome on Novira. You must clearly attribute the original source (e.g., "A fan fiction based on [Original Work] by [Original Author]"). Fan fiction involving real people (RPF/RPS) must be clearly labeled and must not depict real individuals in sexual, violent, or defamatory scenarios.
Publisher Obligations — Mature Content
Publishers who submit M-rated content accept these additional obligations. These exist to protect readers, protect the platform, and protect you.
Accurate Rating at Submission
You are responsible for correctly rating your work. Misrepresenting content to avoid the age gate — marking an 18+ work as general — is a violation of these guidelines. Our moderation team will re-rate it and may issue a formal warning.
Content Warnings on Chapters
M-rated chapters must carry specific content warnings in the chapter description. A single "Mature" label is not sufficient — state the nature of the content (e.g., explicit sexual content, graphic violence, themes of self-harm, torture). Readers deserve the ability to make informed choices.
Clean Public-Facing Excerpts
Previews, teasers, and promotional excerpts shown to non-authenticated users must be drawn from content suitable for general audiences. Do not use M-rated panels or passages as preview images or chapter summaries visible without login.
Age-Gating Compliance
M-rated content is only accessible to users who have created an account and confirmed they are 18 or older. Publishers may not attempt to circumvent this system by distributing M-rated content through Flux posts, external links, or any surface where age verification has not occurred. Circumvention is treated as a severe violation.
Enforcement Ladder
We believe in proportional, transparent enforcement. Here is how we respond to violations, from least to most severe:
-
Formal Warning A written notice is sent to your registered email explaining the violation and the specific guideline breached. Your account and content remain active. Warnings are logged.
-
Content Removal The violating content (chapter, story, comment, or profile element) is removed. A notice is sent to your email with the specific reason. You may appeal within 14 days.
-
Temporary Suspension (3–30 days) Your account is suspended for a period proportional to the severity of the violation. You may not access publishing features or interact with the platform during suspension.
-
Permanent Ban Your account is permanently and irrevocably terminated. Applied for severe, repeated, or egregious violations (e.g., CSAM, proven doxxing, third offense of plagiarism, coordinated harassment). No appeal is available for permanent bans in the case of CSAM.
Severe violations (e.g., child sexual abuse material or credible real-world threats of violence) may bypass the ladder entirely and may result in immediate permanent ban and reporting to appropriate authorities where required or permitted by law.
Appeal Process
We make mistakes. If you believe a moderation action against your account or content was taken in error, you have the right to appeal.
How to file an appeal:
- Email us at [email protected] within 14 days of the action.
- Use the subject line:
"Moderation Appeal — [Your Username]" - Include: your username, the content that was actioned, the date of the action, and a clear explanation of why you believe the action was incorrect.
- Do not create a new account to circumvent a suspension while your appeal is being reviewed — this will result in rejection of the appeal.
We aim to review appeals within 5 business days where possible. Complex cases, legal issues, or high-volume periods may take longer. Our decision after appeal review is final.
